He understands scars

In a group discussion recently we touched on the topic of scars.

One person described them as beautiful (emotional or physical), not because of the past pain, but because they gave an illustration of redemption or salvation. Healing has taken place. All was not lost. We survived – and we have the scars to prove it.

What are some of the scars from your life so far? Unkind words from your school days that have left their mark? Emotional abuse you feel only you truly understand? Real-life scars from painful surgery? Only you know how deep the pain has been and what it’s taken to heal. Maybe the restoration process has just begun.

I’m comforted by the fact that Jesus knows all about scars. I imagine that in heaven we might see them still on his hands and feet to show what he went through for us. The death he experienced so we could find redemption. True freedom from our sin and shame… true peace as a result of trusting in the One who created the world and went on to mend our mistakes with his sacrificial love – offering us an eternal relationship with Him…

“Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet.”

(Luke 24:38-39)

  1. I think everyone has scars, but how we handle our hurts determines whether they remain open wounds or not. I’ve known people whose thoughts turned to the wrongs and the old pain was new again each day. Our pain will always be a part of who we are, but I’d like to think that in some way, the hurts have made me a better person.

I like the scripture from Luke you referenced 🙂

    1. So true Janna. Well said. I must confess to being caught up for a long time in wrongs from my past, but I don’t want to stay that way. I don’t want to be defined by them, but rather who I am in Jesus as His new creation… Thanks for writing.

  2. Oh yes scars…God does bring beauty from ashes! I just posted a letter I wrote to my 16yr old self and couldn’t stop crying as I wrote from a heart of gratitude of Romas 8:28 and redemption IS beautiful! Thank you!

  3. This is so beautiful and thoughtful, Ali, especially as we think of healing . ..and think of His scars for us. I like being able to look back and see how He brought me through a scarring time . . . amazed that it doesn’t hurt any more. He’s so good at that! 🙂 God bless beautiful you!

    1. Oh thank you Debbie, and wonderful that what you went through doesn’t carry the same level of pain… What an amazing Healer we have. God bless you as you walk in His beautiful freedom!

  4. My scars have inspired me to write for Him and I couldn’t be more glad about that. Especially when He uses my writing to help someone else as they suffer through the healing process of their own scars. What a truly awesome God! Great Post! Blessings to you!
