The number one biggest dream deterrent

Ever talked yourself out of a dream?

It’s easy, especially if we’re wired to overthink things, to rationalise our way out of those ideas that have been building and growing within us.

Those ideas that might just impact the world we live in, even in a small way.

Not long ago, I came across Daniel Flynn through a work project. He’s the founder of a massive consumer movement in Australia called Thankyou.

Every time someone buys one of Thankyou’s branded products, they help fund a water project in developing nations.

Flynn is passionate about inspiring everyday people to live out their dreams, no matter how small – and whether or not they think they are ‘smart enough’ or ‘talented enough’.

In his book, Chapter One, he shares a quote from the movie Jobs, which charts the life of Apple founder Steve Jobs.

“Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is: everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.”

Jobs’ accomplishments were possibly more lofty than the to-do list we might be mulling over.

But his point is that our number one biggest obstacle is often the belief that we are not ‘enough’.

Who decides that, though?

What are the obstacles holding you back from pursuing your dreams and ticking off your goals?

What are the belief systems which tug you away from taking those baby steps towards a future that is more fulfilling and purposeful?

What is one small thing you could do today to step forward in the direction of your dreams?

    1. I’m sorry to hear that – part of being human hey? It’s so hard to find the right balance, and sometimes our passions get a bit out of control. We all definitely need wisdom as to how to go about our dreams while balancing our relationships.

    1. Thanks Joseph – it’s well worth a read. Mmm, weeding… Is this related to your dream of a beautiful garden, or simply an everyday task that’s been forgotten?

      1. Oh this has to do with life in general. My garden is a little crowded at the moment. I have to come to a place where I am willing to weed out the the good things so the God things can grow better.

  1. This is a great post! I’ve entertained a number of things to do in my life, yet have fallen short on many occasions. I need to fight the urge to just quit trying. If I could change something in my life, that would be it…quitting. I need to learn to have a bit more confidence in myself as well.

    1. Thanks Steve. We all dream, and not everything comes to fruition. But that’s life hey? But I do pray that God would give you the tenacity to endure, and pursue the things God would have you pursue, in his strength. You can do it!

  2. Thanks for the post and encouraging messages you share on your blog! God created us with everything we need to accomplish all the desires He placed in us. Keep dreaming and work hard. Looking forward to reading more and connecting. Check out Revealed8.com when you get a chance!
